Literature Text

Let's say that you really like blue giraffes. You're just old enough to know that giraffes aren't blue, but you still like blue giraffes. Your parents, quite to your consternation, demand that you stop drawing blue giraffes because, as you know, giraffes aren't blue. The only explanation your parents can give you for why you shouldn't draw blue giraffes is that, “Giraffes aren't blue.”

Maybe you stop drawing blue giraffes for a while, but it really bothers you that blue giraffes are “just wrong.” So you draw a blue giraffe - and your parents take away your crayons for a week. You protest, saying that, “I know giraffes aren't blue, but I like drawing blue giraffes. Why can't I draw blue giraffes?”

Your parents admonish, “Giraffes aren't blue. It shouldn't be fun to draw blue giraffes because drawing blue giraffes is wrong.”

“Why are blue giraffes wrong?”

“Because giraffes aren't blue.”

Finally, you squeak, “but why can't I like blue giraffes?”
This is a "what it's like" for people with gender identity issues. Gender dysphoria is real; and it is not something one needs to be coerced or otherwise "converted" out of.

- I had intended to make a poster variant of this; I still may, but it's been a few weeks now, so.... yeah.

My mind has been in a lot of places these last several months, and most of those places have some pretty well-worn paths now. I can't even tell you how many photo-manips and creative writings I've started and stopped... But Leelah Alcorn's suicide really struck a cord with me. And so I actually managed to write a few short things. This is one of them.

Those people need proffessional, psychological help. I'm pretty sure there are murderers and pedophiles who want some "blue giraffes". I'm sure some murderer asked "But why can't I kill people?"
